    What’s up with LEDs?

    Do they work?

I am guessing it really depends on the brand – as the market seems overflooded with options to choose. In that capacity – one could argue that LEDs that work for some are the REAL deal – so my question I present to anyone; “What brand LEDs are the REAL deal?” I mean truly spectrum light that can grow. Can we get some brand names that work for sure – or post name brands we know don’t work…

I’ve tried a few . The Ufos performed just ok with a few auto’s in a small tent , wouldn’t recommend tho . Recently purchased a Blackstar led and it is terrible so far . On a positive note, I do have a Progrow-x2 led that works just great . Hope that helps a bit.

A company called Apache Tech is very high quality. They are based out of San Jose, CA as well, american made. the one thing that turned me onto them, that most of these LED companies won’t have is credibility. This companies LED’s are used in NASA research on the ISS (International Space Station) and they are used in Stanford Universities greenhouses. Both of those endorsements are highly regarded in artificial lighting TECH circles.

I got mine from Hydrogrow 500w LED comparable to a 1000w HID…been using it for a cpl years…1st off ya,,,the price is rediculous…but I have been getting pretty good yeilds..not GREAT, but pretty good..never grown under a 1000w, but getting as good or better than the 600w I used to grow with..using less wattage..still puts out some heat though..just finished 4 master kush in 5gallon pots..only got about 9 oz on this grow..but I made a few mistakes..had some humidity issues etc..overall i really like the LED..but they are still very expensive upfront for any of the good ones…Ive stated in another post..I could of got 2 induction lights for the price of this one…if I could do it all over again…….Im getting better as a grower and really starting to dial in my program now with the veganics…starting my next grow this week..gonna shoot for a lb..4plants..5gal pots..prob LA conf…ive almost got a lb with a few grows with this unit..8 plants in 3gal net pots…

I wonder if theres a company out there with the same gear as the igrow induction light now??

Blackstars are slightly lower end and have some problems like diodes going out 6 months in yet I’ve seen great results from them from a three model comparison grow with blackstars being the cheapest unit used. I highly suggest you checkout area-51 they have super fast customer service and they answer questions really well. I have 2 older 135 units from them and they are awesome.
*be sure to note the specs on power usage, the links they provide on diode info, and the warranty/future upgrades. If you ask they also offer really decent deals, as a repeat customer I was quoted at two new SGS units for 400 each or something, I’m sure with more bought it’d be even better*

Have my first LED test going under way right now.. Currently in day 12 of flower. About to start using some Og Tea and Some Roots WebStar. Using two prosource led’s and a BlackDog BD-450 u coming soon.

Kyle I have to say I’m with you on the crazy price of the lights out there! Was very hard for me to shell out the $ vs the cheaper HID’s which I’ve used for years off and on. But so far so good.

Saw that you were lucky enough to have held onto Strawberry Cough! Haven’t seen the real version in years.. She’s definitely a keeper for sure. I recently received 2 units from Sublime Illuminations. Both the 560 watt and a 315 watt units are high quality units. The workmanship on the all-metal units is excellent. I’ve only recently tried them out on a small vegetive project and they worked well.

I don’t grow enough plants to sacrifice any to try and flower with them. I hope others will post share some of their experiences with photo’s…:-)

I have completely switched over to Led’s… It’s a bit costly but over time will be alright.. I only have two lights that I’m currently testing but will have more to come soon… Better for the plants to be under them their whole life… not just for flower…

When using LED’s it is important to remember that this is still new technology.. and just because one light works well dose not mean another will be comparable.. Some lights have 3,5,7,11 different wavelengths.. and I’ve even seen a 15 band… All these variations will effect the plant growth.. A light that works well for veg might not be so great for flower.

As for the lights youve got… Do they actually draw that wattage? If the wattage is on par the 560 would be ideal for a 3×3 and the 315 2.5 x 2.5 max.. nothing bigger or you’ll be unsatisfied.. Try and stay in the same footprint for veg and flower…

When I get the next set of lights I will be running a Veganic run ( Using the OG line ) side by side with my tried and true Organic method.. I conduct dual flower with each light as to test as many variables as quick as possible. So all lights are running 24/7… Running Kw tests.. And be charting everything into an excel file for comparison.. Overall cost of owner ship via 1-10 years.. by mathematical equations of course.. So everyone will be able to decide which light will best fit their needs.

I will also be sending finished product in to get testing..

I had contacted sublime awhile back to try and get some testing… And they just told me to wait and see how they work out for you… I have never taken pics or documented my grows in any way… So to everyone out there I’m still a noob.. lol.. And I have to pay up front for the lights… And as for the plants I had to drive over 200 miles round trip to go and get em… So if it’s plants you need… I’ll pay for em… You already have the lights and it would be cheaper for me to donate for some plants then to go and buy each of those lights to test out myself.. Which I won’t be able to get those lights for another 6 months.. I am really trying to do this for the greater good… I know LED’s are still new and are quite expensive for people to convert to let alone test out.. In the end everyone will be able to make their own choice. But making an choice with results to back it up… Not just taking the manufacturers word.. Ultimately they just want to sell more lights.. which is why they go about using the outrageous claims that a 180 watt LED light will be an 600 HID.. I just stick to the same wattage..

I’m a lil slow to get around to testing new equipment these days. As nearly ALL of my expendable time, space and finances are devoted solely to the development of my nutrient line. Brian from sublime…panel vs modular with x3 lenses…so I’ve been doing some testing in my continuing research with lights so I got a simple (soil master) moisture light and ph meter at home depot …. outside it goes all the way up past 2000 witch is the max setting ..inside the house by the window it measures 200…the lights I tested all sublime illuminations leds lights so I’m not cutting anyone down..four lights to be tested all have 3watt epistar and bridgelux chips …..the 300 watt panel has 144 .3watt chips on a single board with a glass cover draws (248) actual watts……The 315watt with 9 modules and x3 lenses draws (283) actual watts. ….now the 600 watt panel has 288 3watt chips.draws (500 watt) actual the 560 watt 16 module with x3 lenses has 320 3 watt chips..draws 510 watt with the low frequency pulse power……..at 12 inches all lights maxed the meter out at 2000 @ 20 inches the 300watt panel dropped to 1100 the others we’re still hitting 2000 …@30 inches is where it gets interesting…the 300watt panel dropped to 600…. the 600 watt panel dropped to 950 …now the 315watt with the x3 lenses measured 1300 and the 560watt 16 module with x3 lenses measured 2000 still over twice the penitrating power as the panel lights ….same wattage ..i measured a foot from center the results were the same almost twice the number. …..good useable light is 500 on this meter…brian… from left to right 560watt modules 315watt modules 600watt panel 300watt panel …120 watt no tested

After digging and reading I would love to run a BML SPYDR 1200 setup but I think Ive settled on Advanced LED Diamond 350XML 5w. Anyone with experience with these yet?

I’ve used Advanced, Black Dog, G8, and Kessil, My Mars II 1600 will be in on Friday. But, for about the same money you should Really consider the Spectrum King 350 series. The 450 has proven 1 gram per watt yields. I haven’t gotten into the Spectrum King’s yet that is my next light. If you only have money for one light Spectrum King LED.

    Hello That1dood,

Welcome to the forum, myself and everyone look forward to helping you become a great grower but stay within your laws!

If you are looking for a led to grow with I strongly recommend Spectrum king Led. I have tested the spectrum king led sk400 and it blew me away I got 1.65 grams per watt! I would be glad to give you as much info as you want on their lights. You can also check out the spectrum king led tab on the forum here under lights, bulbs, and ballast. I’m in the process of switching all my lights over to spectrum king! If you look into them and want to purchase a light or two from them I have a discount code I can share with you and anyone that wants to buy one of their great lights!

    As always LightSpeedGrows,

Have a great growing day with a feel good vibe!

I have the Spectrum King LED light 400 Series.  I’ve grown under a Black Dog LED for a couple of years.  The BD produced some really bomb medicine.  A full extract oil from my last BD grow came back at 80% THC grown using the famous Vegamatrix nutrient line.  Only problem with BD is the led diodes (China made) would always blow out after every harvest.  Also I noticed buds were kinda fluffy.  So because of the lights always going out on me, and always having to ship it back to BD, I’ve decided to move on and try out the Spectrum King LEDs.  SK uses Cree LEDs and after two grows no problem whatsoever with leds blowing out.  Under my BD I’ve gotten very close to and sometimes just a tad over a pound of dry bud (5 plants).  My first grow under the Spectrum King produced 1 pound, 3 ounces of dry bud (5 plants).  Buds were very dense as well oppose to the BD.  Heat is definitely not an issue with the SK.  on really hot days temps will reach 85 degrees easy.  So I just turn the dimmer down a bit at first lights on bringing the temps down to where I want it, and back up after about an hour when it gets cooler at night.  Or sometimes I just turn my ac on for a few.  Full spectrum light coming from the SK is very intense and because of this I noticed my lower buds are huge!  I’m very happy with this light.  My PG&E is about $130 a month.  This is my full power amount and not just what I pay for lights and 3×3 tent.  Vegamatrix Rocks….and so far Spectrum King rocks.  Waiting to get lab test after harvest in a week.  Then cure for a month.  I’ll try and post pictures….Hmmmm?

Hey LightSpeed, Spectrum King has a newer light that just came out.  The 400+ Serise. Their 400 has 125,000 LUX and the plus has 150,000 LUX.  Pretty intense!  http://www.spectrumkingled.com/our-grow-lights/

    Hey MichaelG,

I’m glad to hear that you are pleased with your results from the spectrum king and I love my Sk400 and getting the new 400+ soon! It’s great to see more and more people pulling great results with a led light and Vegamatrix because I know I pull great stats and it’s great to see other growers matching that also!

    As always LightSpeedGrows,

Have a great growing day with a feel good vibe!
